Summary

"Discoveries Made Upon Men and Matter and Some Poems" by Ben Jonson is a compilation of essays, reflections, and poems from the early 1600s that offers sharp observations about people, society, and right and wrong, mirroring the tangled realities of the era. It touches on different ideas, highlighting the author's smarts and his focus on strong character, goodness, and the strength of knowledge. The book begins by introducing Jonson's views, pointing out his impact on literature and what inspired him through daily readings and personal experiences. He thinks about why people do what they do, the value of being wise and honest, and the common bad habits of society. Each reflection, or "Timber," gives a peek into the mind of a key figure in English writing, beautifully mixing poetry with thoughtful discussions.

About the Author

Benjamin Jonson was an English playwright and poet. Jonson's artistry exerted a lasting influence on English poetry and stage comedy. He popularised the comedy of humours; he is best known for the satirical plays Every Man in His Humour (1598), Volpone, or The Fox, The Alchemist (1610) and Bartholomew Fair (1614) and for his lyric and epigrammatic poetry. He is regarded as "the second most important English dramatist, after William Shakespeare, during the reign of James I."
