Summary

"Gaspar Ruiz" by Joseph Conrad is a gripping novella set during a South American revolutionary war, exploring themes of identity and injustice. The narrative plunges into the life of Gaspar Ruiz, a strong and complicated man, caught in the brutal conflict. Accused of desertion, he is sentenced to death, despite his innocence. The story contrasts Gaspar's physical power with the compassion of Lieutenant Santierra, who finds himself drawn into Gaspar’s struggle for survival in a morally ambiguous world. The opening lays the groundwork for an intense examination of human character against the backdrop of a violent revolutionary war.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
