Summary

"An Outcast of the Islands" by Joseph Conrad is a story set long ago that looks at tough ideas like who we really are, being disloyal, and not knowing what's right or wrong. The main guy, Willems, is mixed up and his choices put him in a tough spot, showing how taking advantage of others and falling apart as a person can go hand in hand. At first, Willems thinks he can get away with a little dishonesty and go back to being good. But as he deals with his wife, Joanna, and the Da Souza family, he learns that thinking he's better because he's European doesn't mean much. When Willems and Joanna argue, you can see how much trouble their relationship is in because of his ego and how he ignores her. The beginning of the book makes you feel like something bad is going to happen, with Willems getting more and more cut off from everyone and getting ready to face some seriously difficult choices.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
