Burdened by past mistakes and feeling like an outsider among his peers and the military personnel, Morning struggles with self-doubt and shame. As he interacts with figures like the respected journalist Mr. Reever Kennard and the thoughtful Duke Fallows, he faces both his personal internal conflicts and the external challenges of war, all while seeking redemption and purpose amidst the turmoil in preparation for the Russo-Japanese War.
