Summary

"Routledge Rides Alone" by Will Levington Comfort is a story set in the early 1900s, about Cosmo Routledge, an American war reporter, and his trips through Asia. The tale hints at themes of growing up, the terrible effects of war, and seeing the world in different ways. The story follows Routledge's relationships, especially the one with Noreen Cardinegh, who is the daughter of a famous war correspondent. The story begins with Jerry Cardinegh, remembering his time in China and excited for Routledge to come home. When they meet again, they talk about their experiences, the war, and the friendships that war creates. As they wait for Routledge, Noreen shows how much she respects him, showing that he is important not only as a war reporter but also as someone who understands the world. This beginning sets the stage for conflicts that will happen later in the story, while also exploring the personal feelings between the characters.
