** "Attila: A Romance. Vol. I." by G. P. R. James is a historical tale that unfolds in Roman-era Dalmatia, centering on Attila, leader of the Huns. The story combines themes of love, loss, and power within landscapes described with great detail. The initial setting presents a serene Dalmatian scene filled with music and life as a group of nobles gathers, including Lady Flavia, her daughter Eudochia, and her son Ammian. Familial bonds and societal expectations are soon overshadowed by a sense of foreboding, symbolized by an impending earthquake that shatters their tranquil existence and hints at trials to come. **
