Summary

"Antique Works of Art from Benin" by Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers is a record about the beautiful art taken from Benin City after a British military operation in 1897. It talks about what these objects meant to the people of Benin and puts them in a historical situation, looking at how European contact affected Benin's artistic style. The beginning of the book describes how European countries, especially Portugal, first met the Kingdom of Benin, showing it as a lively and developed place before the British came. It tells the story of a failed trip in 1896 that ended badly, and the later military action that led to the British taking many impressive artworks, mostly made of brass, bronze, and ivory. By briefly looking at things like plaques showing warriors and ceremonial items, the book shows how they were used in ceremonies and connected to the beliefs of the people, helping readers understand Benin culture and its role in a colonial story.
