Summary

"Tortoises" by D. H. Lawrence is a series of early 20th-century poetic works that uses the tortoise as a lens through which to explore themes of existence, loneliness, and the complex designs of life. Through vivid and expressive language, Lawrence presents the life phases and traits of tortoises to show more profound meanings. The beginning poem presents both the challenges and the isolated nature of a young tortoise starting out, while another poem contemplates the beauty and complexity of their outer layers as a symbol of life’s mathematical structure. The dynamics between male and female tortoises are explored, displaying desire and companionship. Progressing through a contemplation of the tortoise's lives and the nature of being, the series ends contemplating the deep effects of sexuality and the search for wholeness. Through these glimpses, Lawrence perfectly captures both the simplicity and the wisdom of life, encouraging readers to consider their own place in the world.

About the Author

David Herbert Lawrence was an English novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, literary critic, travel writer, essayist, and painter. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. Four of his most famous novels — Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928)— were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of romance, sexuality and use of explicit language.
