Summary

"The Murderous Tyranny of the Turks" by Arnold Toynbee is a historical exploration of the Ottoman Empire's oppressive control, exposing the extensive pain experienced by the numerous dominated populations, notably Christians, under Turkish power. It criticizes the Ottoman administration's violent actions and shortcomings, while also promoting the freedom of these abused groups. Toynbee describes the historical background and outcomes of Turkish control by presenting specifics of crimes against Armenians, Greeks, and other ethnic groups. He highlights the methodical abuse and acts of genocide carried out by the Young Turks, particularly during World War I, as part of their nationalistic goal to standardize the empire. The author argues for the critical end of Turkish rule in Europe, claiming that it has caused centuries of devastation and pain, and he promotes a restructuring of the region based on nationality and justice for the oppressed.
