Summary

"The Romancers: A Comedy in Three Acts" by Edmond Rostand is a captivating romantic comedy that dives into the lives of young Sylvette and Percinet, whose budding love is tested by their fathers' long-standing animosity. Set against a backdrop of feigned hatred and secret rendezvous by an old wall, the play unfolds with comedic twists as the fathers plot to unite the young lovers through manipulation. As a fake abduction leads to misunderstandings and revelations, the play highlights the importance of genuine emotions over contrived romance, culminating in a reconciliation that affirms love can overcome even deeply rooted conflicts.

About the Author

Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand was a French poet and dramatist. He is associated with neo-romanticism and is known best for his 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac. Rostand's romantic plays contrasted with the naturalistic theatre popular during the late nineteenth century. Another of Rostand's works, Les Romanesques (1894), was adapted to the 1960 musical comedy The Fantasticks.
