Summary

"The King of Schnorrers: Grotesques and Fantasies" by Israel Zangwill is a humorous story set in 18th-century London. It looks at the world of Jewish beggars through the story of Joseph Grobstock, a rich man, and Manasseh Bueno Barzillai Azevedo da Costa, a very proud schnorrer. Grobstock loves giving to the poor, but a funny mistake with Manasseh, who sees himself as better than the average beggar, starts a series of events that shows the differences between the rich and poor. It also shows how important charity, pride, and being part of the Jewish community were at the time. The book uses comedy to explore these serious subjects, showing how people connect and clash in unexpected ways.

About the Author

Israel Zangwill was a British author at the forefront of Zionism during the 19th century, and was a close associate of Theodor Herzl. He later rejected the search for a Jewish homeland in Palestine and became the prime thinker behind the territorial movement.
