Summary

"The Old Maids' Club" by Israel Zangwill is a funny book from the 1800s about a clever young woman named Lillie Dulcimer. Tired of her dad trying to find her a husband, Lillie starts a club for women who, like her, aren't interested in getting married just because society tells them to. The Old Maids’ Club is about changing what it means to be an "Old Maid." Lillie and her friends make up silly rules for the club to show how silly they think the idea of marriage is, all while trying to find their own happiness. When a man gets involved with the club's antics, the story uses humor to look at relationships, what society expects from people, and how women try to figure out who they are.

About the Author

Israel Zangwill was a British author at the forefront of Zionism during the 19th century, and was a close associate of Theodor Herzl. He later rejected the search for a Jewish homeland in Palestine and became the prime thinker behind the territorial movement.
