Summary

"The Broken Gate: A Novel" by Emerson Hough is a story set in the early 1900s that follows Dieudonné "Don" Lane as he learns the truth about his origins when he finds his mother, Aurora Lane, after believing he was an orphan. The story begins in Spring Valley, a small town quick to judge Aurora for having a child outside of marriage. When Don arrives, the townspeople are curious about him and his connection to Aurora, and although both are happy to finally meet, they worry about what it means for their lives. An incident involving Aurora and a local bully, Eph Adamson, pushes Don to defend his mother, which reveals long-hidden secrets and forces the town to rethink what they believe, leading to bigger struggles about who people really are, mistakes from the past, and the possibility of forgiveness.
