Summary

"The Lawton Girl" by Harold Frederic is a story about Jessica Lawton, a young woman who comes back to her small town after being away for a while, carrying secrets from her past. She has to deal with people judging her as she tries to fit back into the town, and her life gets mixed up with a rich man named Mr. Boyce and her old teacher, Reuben Tracy. When Jessica gets back to Thessaly it feels different to her now, even though it used to feel like home. Her dad has a hard time taking care of the family, and Jessica has to face her feelings when she sees people from her old life and tries to make peace with her past. She wants to start over, but it's not easy because everyone in town remembers her as someone who made mistakes. The beginning of the book shows how hard it is for Jessica as she deals with her family, what people expect from her, and her own journey to make things right in a town full of gossip.
