A group of people from all walks of life travel together on a religious trip to Canterbury. To pass the time, each person tells a tale that shows their personality and the customs of the time, revealing funny, serious, and thought-provoking insights into their world and showcasing medieval culture, values, and society as a whole. The story starts at an inn, where twenty-nine travelers are excited to begin their trip. The narrator wants to come along and explains each character, like the brave Knight and his Squire, and others like a nun, a monk, and different workers, showing what makes each person special and what their place is in society, setting the scene for a storytelling contest that mirrors both their personal lives and the difficulties of the 1300s.

About the Author

Geoffrey Chaucer was an English poet, author, and civil servant best known for The Canterbury Tales. He has been called the "father of English literature", or, alternatively, the "father of English poetry". He was the first writer to be buried in what has since come to be called Poets' Corner, in Westminster Abbey. Chaucer also gained fame as a philosopher and astronomer, composing the scientific A Treatise on the Astrolabe for his 10-year-old son, Lewis. He maintained a career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier, diplomat, and member of parliament.
