"The Vatican Swindle" by André Gide is a story that takes place when Leo XIII was pope. It focuses on Anthime Armand-Dubois, a curious scientist who doesn’t believe in religion, and it shows how he deals with his family and society. Anthime travels to Rome for medicine with his religious wife, Veronica, and Julius. They argue about faith, because Veronica wants him to become religious, but he stays an atheist. Their relationship has problems. Then, a clever kid named Beppo enters their lives so Anthime can experiment on living things. Another family, the Baragliouls, arrives, making the story more complex and mixing funny and sad moments as everyone tries to find meaning in a world of knowledge and faith.
