Summary

"Dr. Dumany's Wife" by Mór Jókai is a story set in the late 1800s, beginning with the tale of a young, disabled boy named James Dumany and his family's experiences after a terrible train wreck. Themes of love, tragedy, and how people interact with each other in society seem to run through the book, all shown through characters affected by a disaster. The story starts with a traveler who hears about a rich American family and their many servants traveling on the St. Gothard railway, only for a landslide to cause a disastrous train accident. The main character suddenly has to save the child when the governess tragically dies, and as the plot moves forward, we start to see the complexities of relationships, what society expects, and how people deal with loss.
