Summary

"Manasseh: A Romance of Transylvania" by Mór Jókai is a historical novel set against the backdrop of revolution, probably around 1848, weaving together love, war, and political conflict. The story follows Manasseh Adorjan, a young nobleman, who finds himself caught between his personal desires and the turmoil ripping through his homeland of Transylvania. The book opens with Manasseh meeting two women and their companion at a busy Italian train station. In his interactions with them, it becomes clear Manasseh is wrestling with unfulfilled dreams, political frustration, and a fierce love for his country. Their meeting hints at budding romances and partnerships forged in a time of chaos, suggesting his journey is as much about inner struggle as it is about physical travel.
