Summary

"Hail to the Chief" by Randall Garrett is a political science fiction novel from the early 1960s that looks at the cutthroat world of politics through the presidential campaign of Senator James Cannon. It's a story about how image and power affect people, showing Senator Cannon's journey to the presidency while facing global crises like tension with the Soviet Union and strange alien tech. When Cannon has to pick a running mate, he thinks about Matthew Fisher, a good guy without much charm. As the election gets closer, things get intense, and everything depends on Cannon's choices, revealing a sharp understanding of political tricks. The story wraps up with Cannon surprisingly making Fisher president, focusing on sacrifice and what it really means to be a good leader.
