Summary

"Studies of the Greek Poets (Vol 1 of 2)" by John Addington Symonds is a thorough look at the world of Greek poetry and the time it was written in. This book, penned in the late 1800s, digs into the history of Greek writing, shining a light on important poets such as Homer and Hesiod. It talks about how poetry changed over time, looking at different styles and subjects. By carefully studying the language, myths, and social and political happenings, the book hopes to make clear the rich history of Greek poetry. The book starts by explaining the basics of Greek literature, dividing it into five time periods, from the age of heroes and epic poems to a time when Greek culture wasn't as strong. The author thinks about how hard it is to truly understand the beginnings of Greek culture and writing, pointing out the tricky change from stories based on myths to ideas based on philosophy in ancient times. Symonds explains how language and myths were the foundation of Greek poetry, setting the scene for studying individual poets and their works in detail later on. This beginning part acts as a thoughtful introduction to a more profound exploration of the Greek poets who shaped the world of literature.
