Summary

"Walter Pieterse: A Story of Holland" by Multatuli is a story set in 19th-century Amsterdam that follows the journey of a young boy named Walter Pieterse as he deals with growing up, romance, and what society expects from him. Walter looks for who he is and dreams of adventure, noticing the humor and sadness around him. At the start, Walter is a thoughtful young boy in Amsterdam, curious and wanting adventure and love, which he finds in books, most notably “Glorioso.” He gets caught up in social situations with his friends and family, and his inner thoughts show he wants a different life than the normal one he knows. The story examines being young, having big goals, and how society affects people, written with a clever and critical style.
