Summary

"The Garotters" by William Dean Howells is a funny story set in the late 1800s, focusing on mix-ups and what's considered right and wrong in society when a robbery goes sideways. Mr. Roberts thinks he's been robbed and chases after the person he thinks did it, eventually tackling him. It turns out he grabbed the wrong watch and attacked an innocent man, Mr. Bemis. The story follows Roberts as he deals with what he's done, touching on ideas like honor, what society expects, and how silly people can act. Roberts' wife, Agnes, and their friends react in different ways, from worry to pride to disbelief. Everything comes to a head at a dinner party where the truth comes out piece by piece, making everyone laugh and think about the results of acting violently and the issues with mistaken identity.
