Summary

"The Register" by William Dean Howells is a funny story that shows the ups and downs of figuring out love in a world full of social rules. Set in a Boston boarding house in the early 1900s, it follows the lives of some young women and men as they try to understand their own hearts and what society expects from them. Ethel Reed thinks she has no chance with the man she likes, Mr. Oliver Ransom, because of a misunderstanding, and Henrietta Spaulding has her own ideas about love and class. The story is all about mixed signals, especially as Ransom starts to sort out his feelings for Ethel and realize how awkward he has been around her. In the end, the book mixes funny moments with serious thoughts, leading to a satisfying and humorous conclusion about understanding both love and yourself.
