Summary

"Canadian Crusoes: A Tale of the Rice Lake Plains" by Catharine Parr Strickland Traill is an adventure story that begins in the beautiful, rough lands between Rice Lake and Ontario during the early days of Canadian settlements. Duncan Maxwell, a young soldier from the Highlands, and his soon-to-be wife, Catharine, are among the first to navigate the hardships of building a life in the wild. The story quickly turns to the children of these settlers when they wander off into the woods and get lost, forcing them to use their courage, their friendships, and the natural world around them to find their way back home and overcome unexpected dangers.

About the Author

Catharine Parr Traill was an English-Canadian author and naturalist who wrote about life in Canada, particularly what is now Ontario. In the 1830s, Canada covered an area considerably smaller than today. At the time, most of Upper Canada had not been explored by European settlers.
