Summary

"Caleb Conover, Railroader" by Albert Payson Terhune is an early 20th-century novel following Caleb Conover's journey. Born from modest origins, Caleb rises to power in railroads and politics where he yearns for social acceptance and the glittering world of the wealthy. The story opens at a lavish party thrown by Caleb to flaunt his wealth and celebrate his daughter's marriage to a royal. However, as the party unfolds, Caleb struggles to fit into high society as he wrestles with his past; the arrival of a political rival only underscores the tensions of social class and political dreams. The novel unfolds around themes of ambition, acceptance, and the challenges of power.
