Summary

"Parochial and Plain Sermons, Vol. VII" by John Henry Newman is a compilation of sermons from the 1800s that explores Christian beliefs and moral principles designed to help believers on their spiritual journey. These sermons tackle heavy topics like understanding the value of time, the certainty of death, the heavy weight of wanting worldly things, and what real faith is versus just chasing after things that don't matter. The book starts with a sermon called "The Lapse of Time," which reflects on Solomon's advice to work hard on saving your soul. Newman stresses how important it is to live with purpose and a sense of urgency because life passes by so quickly. He explains how the things around us can pull us away from realizing how precious each moment is. He also emphasizes that we'll be held responsible for our actions after we die and that it’s crucial to line up what we do with what God expects, pushing readers to focus on their spiritual health rather than temporary pleasures here on Earth.
