Summary

"Hymni ecclesiae" by John Henry Newman is a collection of religious hymns written in the 1800s. The collection explores what makes a good church hymn, and it highlights the struggle of how to praise God in a truthful way that is based on the Bible and traditions of the church. The text starts by discussing the thoughts and artistic ideas behind writing hymns and how they are different than spontaneous Psalms. Newman looks at older hymns and talks about wanting worship to go back to being more genuine while still respecting old traditions. This sets the stage for the hymns and gives the reader an idea of the spiritual and religious meanings.
