Summary

"The Gallery Gods" by Murray Leinster is a crime story from the early 1900s that looks at themes of crime and the mind. It's about William Beckwith, who is proud because he murdered Hugh Conway, a well-known person. William is shocked when he finds out that no one is reporting on the murder, which makes him think there's a big secret being kept. At first, William is excited for his crime to be revealed, he believes he will become famous. But, the newspapers say nothing about Conway’s death, making William worried and desperate. As he journeys back to New York, he hopes to prove that he killed the man, but he ends up in a trap made by the police chief, Wells. William then figures out that all his actions got him exactly where Wells wanted him, and he is arrested while reporters are there to see him be embarrassed. The story talks about ego, trying to become famous, and what happens to people who try to push against what society expects.
