Summary

"The Trumpet in the Dust" by Constance Holme is a story set in the early 1900s about Mrs. Clapham, a hardworking cleaning woman, who is filled with eager anticipation one September morning, hoping for a major positive change in her life. The whole story revolves around her waiting for news about her application to the local almshouse – a comfortable home representing the end to her years of hard work. As she gets ready for the day, convinced it will bring good news, she thinks back on her life, her daughter Tibbie, and the rest of the village, including the vicar’s wife and Miss Marigold, who is getting married that very day. Mrs. Clapham is proud of of all her work and the people in her life, leading up to the time she has been waiting so long for, with her rival, Martha Jane, also hoping for the same change, their intertwined stories reveal themes of community, relationships, and the unpredictable nature of fate as the day unfolds.

About the Author

Edith Constance Holme, married name Punchard, was an English writer and playwright. She was born in Milnthorpe, Westmorland, the youngest of fourteen children. Her novels are set in the old county of Westmorland, where she lived most of her life.
