Summary

"The Things Which Belong—" by Constance Holme is a story centered around Mattie and Kirkby's life-altering decision to leave their home for Canada. The narrative is set at the beginning of the 20th century and is thick with emotional undercurrents as the main characters contemplate this new chapter in their lives. The story opens with the revelation of Kirkby's resignation as head gardener, a decision that prompts a mix of hope and anxiety as they leave the only home they have ever known. This sets in motion a period of reflection about who they are, what they want, and what the idea of freedom means, especially for Mattie. The story follows them as they struggle with their pasts and their hopes for the future, with Mattie's silent reactions and Kirkby’s pensive observations creating a rich sense of the couple's dynamic and the weight of their choice. Ultimately, the story looks at their journey of self-discovery and a revealing story of what "belonging" truly represents.
