Summary

"Slavery and Four Years of War: A Political History of Slavery in the United States" by Joseph Warren Keifer is a late 19th-century book chronicling America’s journey through slavery and civil war. It deeply examines the political history of slavery, from its origins to its abolition during the Civil War, and blends historical analysis with the author's firsthand experiences as a soldier from 1861-1865. It argues that slavery was pivotal in shaping America's political landscape, leading to secession and war, and emphasizing the role of key events such as early colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, the Dred Scott decision, and the Confederate States formation. With a mix of personal narrative and historical facts, this book illuminates the profound ways slavery influenced the nation's destiny.
