Summary

"The King's Ring" by Zacharias Topelius is a tale set during the Thirty Years' War, where we meet Gustaf Bertila, a farm boy turned soldier fighting for the Swedish King, Gustavus Adolphus. It's a story about courage, staying true to your word, and figuring out what's more important: doing what you want or what you have to do during wartime. Right away, we're introduced to the surgeon, Bäck, who tells us about his life, which is mixed up with big moments in history. Bäck shares his amazing journey from being a nobody to fighting in important battles. It all builds to a tense moment where he has to face the results of his births and relationships while political games are being played. You'll be hooked by both the exciting action and the growth of the characters as they deal with personal struggles and big historical events, seeing how tough war can be and how complicated people can be also.
