Summary

"Which? Or, Between Two Women" by Ernest Daudet is a passionate story of two mothers whose lives become entangled with a noble family in Paris. A young gypsy, Tiepoletta, runs away to save her baby, Dolores, leading them to the doorstep of the de Chamondrin family. Tiepoletta's death leaves Dolores to be cared for by the Marquis, growing up amidst the privileges and expectations of the aristocracy. As Dolores matures, she finds herself at the center of a complicated love triangle, wrestling with identity, societal pressures, and the stirrings of her heart, which all test her loyalties and desires.
