Summary

"The Third Degree: A Narrative of Metropolitan Life" by Charles Klein is a story set in early 20th century New York City about a young man named Howard Jeffries, who is facing challenges in his life. Once full of promise, Howard now feels like a failure because he struggles with drinking and the consequences of marrying Annie, a waitress who comes from a different social background than him. The book looks at ideas such as wanting to get ahead, the importance of social standing, and the possibility of fixing one's mistakes, all happening in the busy city. The story begins with Howard feeling down and lost in the city, thinking about how far he has fallen while searching for a job. He feels embarrassed, let down, and jealous of others, especially since his own family, who has money, does not talk to him anymore, and it's difficult for him to take care of his wife. The people he meets, like old friends, show how complicated his decisions have made his life and start the story of personal and social struggles.
