Summary

"The Plays of W. E. Henley and R. L. Stevenson" by William Ernest Henley is a compilation of theatrical scripts from the late 1800s, focusing on drama and complex characters. The play "Deacon Brodie" stands out, telling the tale of a man who lives a double life: he's a respected craftsman during the day, but a criminal in the shadows. The story shows Brodie's struggle with his conflicting identities, pulling him between his duties to his family and his dangerous life of crime, setting the stage for difficult choices and exploring themes of morality and societal expectations.

About the Author

William Ernest Henley was an English poet, writer, critic and editor. Though he wrote several books of poetry, Henley is remembered most often for his 1875 poem "Invictus". A fixture in London literary circles, the one-legged Henley was an inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's character Long John Silver, while his young daughter Margaret Henley inspired J. M. Barrie's choice of the name Wendy for the heroine of his play Peter Pan (1904).
