Summary

"Lady Athlyne" by Bram Stoker is a story set in the late 1800s. Set on a ship named the "Cryptic", the story follows Joy Ogilvie and her father, Colonel Ogilvie, as they travel and deal with ideas about honor, love, and what society expects from them. Starting in the rough winter weather, the book shows how the characters' dreams for a better life are tested by what's happening around them. Joy and the Colonel present optimism, their discussions covering devotion and societal challenges, especially for women traveling alone. Joy is full of life and often questions her father’s old-fashioned ideas, starting relationships onboard that lead to meeting a mysterious nobleman, Lord Athlyne, hinting at romance and adventure.

About the Author

Abraham "Bram" Stoker was an Irish author who is best known for writing the 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as the personal assistant of actor Sir Henry Irving and business manager of the West End's Lyceum Theatre, which Irving owned.
