Summary

"Life of a Scotch Naturalist" by Samuel Smiles is a compelling biography that follows the extraordinary life of Thomas Edward, a 19th-century Scottish naturalist and shoemaker. The story opens with Edward’s birth on Christmas Day in 1814 and paints a picture of his energetic and inquisitive childhood, revealing a boy whose passion for nature often clashed with the strictures of formal schooling, ultimately leading to his expulsion from multiple schools due to his insistence on bringing animals and insects into the classroom. It is a story of unwavering dedication as it portrays Edward's journey of pursuing his scientific interests amidst financial difficulties and social barriers, showing his unwavering spirit and significant contributions to the field of natural history. Although he lacked formal education and financial resources, his formative experiences and profound love for the natural world propelled him toward achieving his dream of becoming a naturalist.

About the Author

Samuel Smiles was a British author and government reformer. Although he campaigned on a Chartist platform, he promoted the idea that more progress would come from new attitudes than from new laws. His primary work, Self-Help (1859), promoted thrift and claimed that poverty was caused largely by irresponsible habits, while also attacking materialism and laissez-faire government. It has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism" and had lasting effects on British political thought.
