Summary

"The Life of George Stephenson and of his Son Robert Stephenson" by Samuel Smiles is a 19th-century historical narrative chronicling the remarkable lives and groundbreaking work of George Stephenson, the so-called "Father of Railways," and his son Robert. The story showcases their crucial roles in the railway locomotive's creation, tracking their engineering breakthroughs and the growth of the railway system. Early attempts at steam-powered mechanized transport emerge, especially in England's coal regions, revealing the slow progress and challenges that paved the way for the Stephensons' game-changing inventions. The book celebrates their lasting influence on how people and goods moved, forever altering the course of transit and modern communities.

About the Author

Samuel Smiles was a British author and government reformer. Although he campaigned on a Chartist platform, he promoted the idea that more progress would come from new attitudes than from new laws. His primary work, Self-Help (1859), promoted thrift and claimed that poverty was caused largely by irresponsible habits, while also attacking materialism and laissez-faire government. It has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism" and had lasting effects on British political thought.
