"The Spy in the Elevator" by Donald E. Westlake is a humorous science fiction story that takes place in a future where people live in tall buildings called Projects because the outside world is dangerous. The story follows Edmund Rice, a young man whose plan to propose to his girlfriend gets messed up when a spy gets stuck in an elevator. The story shows Rice's crazy day as he deals with the broken elevator. As he gets more and more frustrated and tries to get to Linda, the story uses funny, but dark humor to develop plot.
