Summary

"The Camera Fiend" by E.W. Hornung is a story set in the early 1900s about a boy named Pocket Upton, who has asthma and feels different from his brothers. While trying to find his own path, Pocket goes to London where big things happen that change his life forever, including a sad event that makes things even harder. At the start, Pocket feels alone and longs for adventure. One night, he sleepwalks in Hyde Park and shoots someone by accident, but he doesn't know how serious it is. Now, he must face the consequences of what he did while trying to keep his family from finding out the truth, exploring ideas of innocence, guilt, and wanting to belong.

About the Author

Ernest William Hornung was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
