Summary

"Idling in Italy: Studies of Literature and of Life" by Joseph Collins is an essay collection from the early 1900s that looks closely at Italian books and cultural experiences. It shows personal and thinking changes that come from knowing Italy's great book history. Collins wants readers, especially Americans, to learn more about Italian writers and the worlds in which they write. The book starts by talking about the strong feelings many Americans have for Italy, seeing it as a key culture for today's world. Collins says it's important to understand Italian writing to really value what the country has given to art and thought, especially after World War I. He talks about how Italian books changed from the Renaissance to the 1800s, mentioning important writers and movements, and hopes that new Italian writers can become important again. This sets the scene for a wider look at certain writers and ideas in later chapters, showing how life and books connect during and after a hard time in history.
