The Water-Babies

The Water-Babies by Charles Kingsley is a novel that weaves together various narrative styles and genres. The story follows the journey of Tom, a young chimney-sweep, who falls into a river and is transformed into a water-baby. Along his journey, Tom faces numerous challenges and meets an array of characters, including Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, a mysterious figure with a fondness for catching and punishing naughty children, and Ellie, a gentle and kind girl who becomes Tom's friend.

Charles Kingsley was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms.
