Summary

"Andromeda, and Other Poems" by Charles Kingsley is a collection of poems that paints vivid pictures with words, focusing on a mix of heart-wrenching personal experiences and grand mythological stories. The first poem, "Andromeda," tells the sad story of a princess whose mother’s pride brings big trouble, showing us themes of beauty, sacrifice, and the anger of the gods. In it, we see a dark-haired Ethiopian community scared by a monster from the sea. Because of her exceptional beauty, Andromeda angers a sea goddess, forcing her parents to make the tough choice of sacrificing their daughter to save the people. The poem is filled with guilt, a mother's love, and the unfair decisions of the gods, creating a dramatic and moving mood that makes you want to explore the rest of Kingsley’s poems.
