Summary

"Guy Deverell, v. 1 of 2" by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu is a gothic novel set in the mid-1800s, where Sir Jekyl Marlowe, a wealthy baronet, finds himself deeply disturbed by Guy Strangways, a young man who bears an uncanny likeness to a deceased family member, stirring up disquieting memories and doubts. The story begins at the hospitable Plough Inn, quickly contrasting Sir Jekyl's cheerful front with his growing agitation upon meeting the attractive newcomer. Driven by growing curiosity and a developing sense of dread, Sir Jekyl is soon seeking him out to learn the truth and unearth secrets linked to the troubled past of his family and the ominous green chamber within his estate setting, all while hints of past family sins linger and the tension between the pleasant life he once knew, and the darker implications of his family's legacy, and bizarre coincidences escalates.
