"The Prophet's Mantle" by E. (Edith) Nesbit is a story set in Russia at the end of the 19th century, about a nobleman, Count Michael Litvinoff, who wrestles with his feelings about social reform while trying to live in two different worlds. When Litvinoff returns to Russia, he meets and becomes good friends with Armand Percival, an English secretary. Together, they explore the political landscape, their own problems, and try to find freedom. Early on, we see how complicated Litvinoff is, as he thinks about the strict rules in Russia and his want for things to be more fair. Litvinoff and Percival become very close after Litvinoff saves a man from ending his life. Percival then helps Litvinoff with his writing and his goals to change things. When Litvinoff's controversial writings put them in danger of being arrested, they must escape from the authorities.
