The story introduces us to the Summers family at Apple Orchard: Squire Adam, his daughter Redbud, and Verty, a free-spirited young hunter. The narrative kicks off one October morning, showing their friendship and simple life. As they prepare for the day, the reader sees a glimpse of what life is like on the Virginia frontier. The story progresses as Miss Lavinia foreshadows what could get in the way of Verty and Redbud’s bond, hinting at a future where conformity and rules complicate their innocent friendship.
