Summary

"The Civil War in America" by William Howard Russell is a historical work that gives readers a peek into the start of the American Civil War from the viewpoint of a special reporter from London. The writing shows the social and political environment of the United States during this confusing time, paying close attention to the events that led to the Southern states breaking away and the first military fights. The beginning of the journal paints a clear picture of Washington, D.C., and New York City, and then compares their apparent quiet with the growing worry over the coming Civil War, and reflects on the actions and feelings of different people, from politicians to everyday citizens, predicting how they might react to the growing conflict and the possible split of the country. Through his thorough observations, Russell prepares to readers for a deeper look at the war's effects and the ideas behind it.
