Summary

"Forestry for Farmers" by B. E. (Bernhard Eduard) Fernow, is an educational work from the 1800s teaching farmers about forestry, particularly how to care for their small wooded areas and lands. It goes over how trees grow, the right way to plant them, and the advantages that forests give to farms, explaining that knowing these things helps both farming and the environment. The book starts by explaining why it was written, because Fernow wants farmers to know more about forestry, which they might not think is important. He makes clear that trees and farming are connected, looking closely at things like the soil, how much sunlight trees need, and how trees grow. By giving practical advice about forestry, Fernow motivates farmers to include trees in their farming plans to make their farms better and help the environment.

About the Author

Bernhard Eduard Fernow was the third chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Division of Forestry of the United States from 1886 to 1898, preceding Gifford Pinchot in that position, and laying much of the groundwork for the establishment of the United States Forest Service in 1905. Fernow's philosophy toward forest management may be traced to Heinrich Cotta's preface to Anweisung zum Waldbau or Linnaeus' ideas on the "economy of nature." Fernow has been called the "father of professional forestry in the United States."
