Summary

"Proxy Planeteers" by Edmond Hamilton is a science fiction story where humans mine uranium on Mercury using remote-controlled machines called Proxies. Doug Norris and Martin Kincaid manage the Proxy Project, which is vital for providing Earth with power. When the Proxies start failing, Norris suspects a strange radioactive lifeform called Raddies are to blame. Through mishaps, including a wild idea to use bismuth instead of uranium, they discover these Raddies are intelligent. The story culminates in the revelation that the Raddies have psychically transmitted knowledge to the humans, highlighting the surprising connection between different kinds of intelligence.
