Summary

"The Owls' House" by Crosbie Garstin is a story that explores the life of John Penhale, a withdrawn farmer whose life was altered by a terrible accident that left him scarred inside and out. Set in the English country, the narrative explores feelings of being alone, the search for love, and how relationships can be hard to manage. The story begins with John leaving a lawyer's office, feeling out of place because of his scars. After a difficult moment at an inn, he thinks back to the accident and how it made him bitter and want to be alone. As John heads home, the book sets up a tale filled with his personal battles and deep feelings, especially as he has to face his past and the possibility of getting married because of his aunt's wishes.
